The route
Beyond the Channel we take the French autoroutes to the south-west and cross into Spain, then run the Spanish network west — broadly towards Burgos and Salamanca — before entering Portugal. The A1 links Porto and Lisbon down the west; the A2 carries on south to the Algarve and towns like Faro, Lagos and Tavira; the A25 and interior roads reach the Silver Coast and the centre. The Algarve, right at the bottom, is the longest leg of a route that is already long.
